Aventurine is a captivating variety of quartz adorned with shimmering specks of mica that give it an enchanting sparkle. It is most often green, but also appears in blue, yellow, brown, white, gray, orange and red.
Its name comes from the Italian ventura, "by chance." Legend says a jewelry maker accidentally dropped metal filings into molten glass, which cooled into a glass with magnificent iridescent sparkles, and the stone was named for that "accidental" sparkling glass it resembles.
Until the 1800s, aventurine was called the stone of the Amazonians, the fierce, independent warrior women of Greek myth, who set it into their breastplates as adornments and talismans. It has been found in Brazil, China, India, Italy, Nepal, Russia and Tibet.
