Illustrated guide to how Palo Santo is sourced: a Bursera graveolens tree, fallen wood at its base and a stack of cut sticks

From the tree

Holy wood of the Americas.

Palo Santo comes from the aromatic Bursera graveolens tree, which grows across Mexico, Peru, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, the Galápagos Islands and mainland Ecuador, and is harvested with care for the best quality.

Ethnobotanist Jonathon Miller Weisberger advises waiting until a tree reaches 50 to 70 years of age and dies naturally before its fallen wood is made into incense sticks. The IUCN lists Bursera graveolens as a species of Least Concern.

Size & details

Cut thick for a long, smoky burn.

These sticks are left untrimmed after their natural cut, so each one stays thick, lights easily and burns longer with a full, fragrant smoke.
