The stone

A pink heart inside a green rind.

Watermelon tourmaline grows its colors in layers within a single crystal: a pink core wrapped in a green outer band. Slice it across and it looks just like its namesake.

The beads carry that whole palette, from rose and raspberry pink to leaf green, honey gold and deep teal. Fine material with this color contrast comes from only a few places, including Brazil, Madagascar and Afghanistan, and collectors have long sought it out.

Each round bead is shaped from watermelon tourmaline with diamond-grit tools, drilled and polished in several stages. At six millimeters, every bead is large enough to show its color depth, inner structure and soft translucence.
