Copper green, straight from the earth.

Close-up of a rough malachite piece held between fingers, its surface covered in fine glinting green crystal needles

Rough malachite

Silky green needles that catch the light.

Each stone is left rough, a mass of fine green crystals that shimmer like velvet as you turn it. Malachite forms where water meets copper minerals, and the copper paints it every shade from bright emerald to deep forest green.

Its name comes from the Greek word for mallow, after the green of the plant's leaves.

Treasured since ancient Egypt.

Malachite has been ground into paint pigment for thousands of years. It adorned ancient Egyptian jewelry, was carved into ornaments and, as the story goes, was worn as eye cosmetics by Cleopatra. From ancient Egypt to the Victorian era it was kept as a guard against evil spirits and the Evil Eye, and it was linked with peaceful sleep for children.

In crystal tradition, malachite is a stone of protection, transformation and purification, said to absorb negative energy, bring ease during change and carry the essence of joy. It is associated with the heart, solar plexus, sacral and root chakras, and many prefer it rough in the belief that raw stones hold the earth's energy most closely.

Crystals have been prized for centuries for their beauty and believed metaphysical properties; Spirit Magicka makes no guarantee of any mystical or healing effect.
