Black tourmaline

Grown in long, striated rods.

Tourmaline forms when hot, mineral-rich liquids fill open spaces in rock, then cool and harden into crystal. Black tourmaline, also called schorl, is by far its most common form; the name comes from the village of Zschorlau in Saxony, Germany, and has been in use since before 1400.

Legend says tourmaline passed through a rainbow on its way to earth, and it is the most colorful mineral known, found in nearly every color. Its crystal structure even lets it build up an electrical charge under pressure or a change in temperature.
