Tourmalinated quartz is clear quartz with rods of black tourmaline growing through it. It forms when black tourmaline and liquid quartz combine under high pressure and temperature, trapping the tourmaline needles inside the crystal quartz. The black tourmaline is also known as schorl.
Its strength has a long history: ancient tools made by early hominids, our distant relatives in the great ape family, have been found in Ethiopia dating back 2.5 million years, crafted from this stone for its resilience and reliability.
